Liberal party officials are denying reports that Stephane Dion will be resigning his leadership Thursday after the party's worst election showing since Confederation.

A spokeswoman for the Liberal leader says that reports that Dion will step down today are not true. She says she will let the media know when he's ready to speak, but it won't be today.

Election night was the last time Dion was seen in public. Party insiders are quoted as saying he is going through a period of soul searching and was supposed to have announced his resignation after the polls closed Tuesday but avoided the subject in his concession speech.

The Liberals have a convention coming up in May and pundits have suggested Dion would not likely survive a leadership review.

The Liberal leader was at CP24 on Sunday and he was singing a different tune when it came to his future. Dion said he had no plans to step down from the post.

Among the possible contenders champing at the bit to take Dion's spot are Michael Ignatieff. The Etobicoke Lakeshore MP ran for the leadership in 2006 and came in second.

Bob Rae is also thought to be high on the list. As is Gerard Kennedy -- who just won Parkdale High Park back for the Liberals. Kennedy is well known in Ontario and was the kingmaker for Dion at the last convention.

Other names being tossed around are former New Brunswick premier Frank McKenna who has been courted for the spot in the past.

Justin Trudeau -- who just won a seat in Tuesday's election, former Montreal Canadiens goalie, Ken Dryden. Brampton MP Ruby Dhalla and Willowdale MP Martha Hall Findlay's names have also come up as replacements.
