A 21-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy have been arrested in connection with a home invasion and carjacking in Bowmanville on Wednesday night.
Durham Regional Police released parts of the 911 call, as well as surveillance and police helicopter footage showing several moments of the incident that began at a home in the area of Maple Grove Road and Nash Road and ended in a Toronto parking lot.
In the video, a suspect is seen running up the driveway of the home and rolling under a closing garage door as a Jeep G-Wagon is parking inside.
Police said the suspect then threatened the driver and chased her around the garage with a large knife.
“She dropped the keys and ran screaming into the home. The victim’s husband was able to come to her aid, at which time the suspects began chasing him with a knife,” Staff Sgt. Joanne McCabe said in a video statement.
The couple were able to get back into their home, but the suspect began pushing on the door to try and gain entry, McCabe said.
In the 911 call released on Thursday, the husband is heard telling the operator: “He’s broken in and got a knife. He’s got a knife. He’s in the garage.”
The operator asked the husband if he knew the suspect, and he replied no.
McCabe said when the suspect was unsuccessful, he fled the area in the G-Wagon and was followed by a second suspect who was in a getaway vehicle.
A police helicopter was dispatched and was able to locate the stolen vehicle travelling on Highway 401. The suspects are seen driving to a commercial parking lot in the area of McNicoll Avenue and Mogul Drive in North York, where the second suspect got into the G-Wagon.
The police helicopter captured the moment officers on the ground boxed in the vehicle as it was leaving the parking lot.
McCabe said the two suspects were subsequently arrested.
In a news release, they identified one suspect as 21-year-old Muhammad Rahman of Toronto. The other suspect is 16 years old and cannot be named under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Both have been charged with robbery with an offensive weapon, theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a conveyance, break and enter to commit at a dwelling house, disguise with intent and two counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.
