Kyle Douglas Prouse, 53, of Montreal.

A man who allegedly shot a North York, Ont., mall security guard during an attempted robbery is accused of stealing more than $235,000 worth of jewelry in Oshawa two years ago.

Durham Regional Police said Kyle Douglas Prouse is wanted for an auto theft in Pickering and a break-and-enter at a jewelry store in Oshawa in August 2023.

“Both incidents are related as the stolen vehicle was used in the commission of the jewelry store break-and-enter,” Durham police said in an email to CP24.

Prouse is being sought by Toronto police following Tuesday morning’s shooting at Fairview Mall.

Investigators said Prouse allegedly entered a jewelry store and took a quantity of merchandise.

A member of the mall’s security team confronted Prouse, which ended in the shooting, police said.

The guard sustained serious injuries and was transported to the hospital.

Prouse, meanwhile, fled the mall in a white van that was later recovered, said police.

They believe Prouse then used another vehicle, a black Honda Accord, to get away.

Police said the 53-year-old from Montreal has ties to Toronto and Vancouver.

He was last seen wearing a grey hoodie with the hood up, grey pants, a blue baseball cap, a white medical mask, and black shoes. Police said there were flecks of white paint on his clothing.

Police are asking anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact them or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
