Durham regional police are seeking the public’s help after a 23-year-old man was found dead with “traumatic injuries” following an altercation outside a Tim Hortons in Oshawa.
Officials say the incident happened on Saturday shortly after 8 p.m. in the area of Simcoe Street North and Winchester Road East following reports of an “armed person.”
When officers arrived, they say they found the victim suffering from traumatic injuries where he was later pronounced deceased at the scene.
“Two groups of males engaged in a physical altercation outside of the Tim Horton’s,” police said in a news release. “During that altercation, the victim suffered fatal injuries.”
Police say the suspect and “several other males” then fled on foot south and east of the plaza before officers arrived.
After an extensive search involving helicopter and a K9 Unit, police say they were unable make an arrest, adding that “residents can expect an increased police presence in the area as the investigation continues.”
Police say investigators believe the killing was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing risk to public safety.
To help with the investigation, officials are asking anyone with information who was in the area between 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. with cellphone, dashcam or surveillance footage to come forward and contact detectives.
Officials say they are not releasing the victim’s name at this time and that this is Durham’s third homicide of the year.
