A constable-in-training with Durham police is dead and another is seriously injured after an accident near the Ontario Police College.

A constable-in-training (CIT) from Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) had died, while another is fighting for their life, following a motor vehicle collision.

In a statement posted on social media, Police Chief Peter Moreira said they were travelling to the Ontario Police College, in Malahide Township near Aylmer, Ont., for training at the time of the crash.

The collision occurred a few kilometres west of the facility and involved a transport truck and a sedan.

It happened at the intersection of Imperial Road (Highway 73) and College Line at 11:20 a.m.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was uninjured, said Const. Jeff Beaumaster of the OPP.

‘Unimaginable tragedy’

Moreira, of DRPS, said their focus is to support the families of our CITs as well as their classmates, instructors, friends, and DRPS members who are grieving this tragic loss.

“We will continue to ensure they receive the care and support they need,” he said.

“We ask that the public respect the privacy of the families and all those affected as they navigate this unimaginable tragedy, and as notifications continue.”

At this time, Ontario Provincial Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision and DRPS will not be providing any further details, said Moreira.

‘Devastating loss’

In a statement, Durham Regional Police Service Board expressed its “sincerest sympathies to the family, friends and colleagues of the DRPS member who suffered fatal injuries in a motor vehicle collision while travelling today to the Ontario Police College in Aylmer, Ontario.”

“Along with all members of the DRPS family, we mourn this devastating loss with a profound sense of sorrow. Our heartfelt thoughts are with the family of the second constable-in-training who sustained serious injuries and remains in hospital,” the board wrote.

“We know that in this moment of tragedy, Chief Moreira, his leadership team, representatives of the Durham Regional Police Association and all DRPS members will unite to support one another with compassion, love, and respect. To all police personnel, we extend our gratitude for your enduring and resilient service.”

Roads in that immediate area remain closed as police investigate.
