Man charged after police find more than $5,700 in baby formula, hygiene products following alleged fraud attempt

A Vaughan, Ont., man has been charged after police say they found more than $5,700 worth of baby formula and hygiene products in a vehicle following an alleged fraudulent purchase attempt at a Whitby grocery store.

Durham Regional Police say officers were called to the Real Canadian Superstore in Whitby on July 7 after loss prevention officers reported a man was attempting to fraudulently purchase baby formula, feminine hygiene products and other goods.

Police said the suspect was taken into custody and officers later identified his vehicle, where they located the products along with a replica handgun.

Aoqi Xu, 21, of Vaughan, has been charged with fraud over $5,000, unauthorized use of credit card data and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

Xu has since been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court.

The allegations have not been proven in court.
