Funeral to be held on Friday for Durham police recruit killed in collision

The body of 27-year-old Tyrone Magbitang arrives at the coroner’s office as the investigation into the collision that took his life continues.

Funeral arrangements have been announced for a Durham police recruit killed early last week in a collision.

On July 7, Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) constable-in-training Tyrone Magbitang was driving a sedan that was involved in a collision with a transport truck. Police said he and an unnamed passenger were travelling to the Ontario Police College near Aylmer, Ont., for training at the time of the crash.

Magbitang, who was 27, died at the scene. The other person in the vehicle was critically injured.

A private funeral for Magbitang has been organized for Friday. The location and time have not been publicly disclosed.

Police say the service will only be open to family members, friends, and members of the “first responder community,” adding that this is being done “out of respect for the wishes of the Magbitang family and the privacy of all those grieving this tragic loss.”

Magbitang’s family is also asking for privacy as they mourn the loss of a “beloved son, family member, friend, classmate, and colleague.”

“(We remain) deeply grateful for the outpouring of support received from the community, policing partners, and first responders across the country,” Durham police said in a news release.

Those wishing to pay tribute to Magbitang are invited to sign an online book of condolences.
