An elderly man walking his dog was fatally struck by a vehicle in Hamilton on Thursday morning, police say.
The collision occurred at the intersection of Upper Ottawa Street and Anson Avenue shortly before 10 a.m.
Hamilton police said an 83-year-old man was in the crosswalk with his dog when he was hit by a northbound red four-door sedan.
He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The dog was not injured.
Meanwhile, police said the driver remained at the scene and is cooperating. Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact the traffic reconstruction unit at 905-546-4755.
The incident is the third pedestrian fatality in Hamilton in a week.
On Nov. 13, a 52-year-old City of Hamilton crossing guard was struck and killed by a dump truck at the intersection of Mohawk Road and Upper Wentworth Street.
Two days later, a 42-year-old woman died in hospital after she was hit by a pickup truck near Wilson Street and McClure Road.
In a statement on social media, Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath said she was devastated by the tragedy.
“Our community, already mourning the loss of two recent pedestrian deaths, is reeling at the news - as am I,” Horwath said.
“Although we do not yet know the full details of today’s tragedy, I am once again urging Hamiltonians to slow down and stay focused. We cannot let this become our new normal. Let’s take care of one another and make choices that keep our neighbours and our community safe.”
I am devastated to learn of yet another pedestrian fatality on our roadways this morning, and my heart goes out to the individual’s family and loved ones. Hamilton Police Services are investigating, and we will fully support their work.
