Hamilton police say a fiery crash on the Stoney Creek Mountain that killed two people this past summer was the result of impaired driving and speeding.
Police were called to a collision in the area of Highland Road and Upper Centennial Parkway just after 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 29.
“A 1951 Plymouth travelling southbound on Upper Centennial Parkway from Highland Road accelerated, lost control, and collided with a northbound 2020 Mercedes SUV,” police said in a release on Wednesday.
Both the driver and passenger of the Plymouth were pronounced dead on the scene, while the passenger of the Mercedes was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Mercedes suffered minor injuries.
Police said their Collision Reconstruction Unit concluded its investigation and determined that impaired driving and speed both contributed to the crash.
“Toxicology results revealed that the driver of the Plymouth was impaired by alcohol,” investigators said.

Police said that makes the crash Hamilton’s fourth fatal impaired-driving-related collision of the year, which has resulted in eight lives lost.
Statistics released earlier this year by Hamilton police indicated that impaired driving incidents increased by 25 per cent in May of 2025 compared to the same month last year.
At the time, police said impaired driving in Hamilton was up 11 per cent year-to-date.
