Brantford Police are asking for the public’s help to find two people who were in a vehicle that ran a red light and then hit a home on Brant Avenue.

It began with a traffic stop, around 2:15 a.m. Sunday, at the intersection of Brant Avenue and Dalhousie Street. Police stated the vehicle was travelling “well below” the speed limit and officers wanted to check if the driver was sober.

During the traffic stop, the driver suddenly took off “at a very high rate of speed” and ran a red light in the process.

Police said they decided not to pursue out of concern for public safety.

Moments later, the vehicle hit a home on Brant Avenue.

“The residence sustained minor damage,” police said in a media release. “A utility box and street intersection sign were also damaged as a result of the incident.”

When officers arrived at the home, three of the men who had been inside the vehicle had already fled.

Police said one man, who was in the driver’s seat, was taken into custody.

“Investigation confirmed that this individual was not the driver of the vehicle,” the release stated. “As a result, a 19-year-old man from Mississauga stands charged with one count of Obstruct[ing a] Peace Officer.”

A canine team was brought in to track the other three men down. One of them was located nearby.

Police said the search continues for the other two suspects.

Anyone with information, including security video of the crash or the flight from police, is asked to contact Constable Armstrong of the Brantford Police Service at 519-756-7050, extension 2961. Anonymous tips can also be made to Crime Stoppers.
