Athletes from across the province will make their way to Brantford next year for the 2027 Ontario Parasport Games.
Ontario’s sport minister Neil Lumsden made the announcement Thursday afternoon at the Brantford and Area Sports Hall of Recognition.
“Our government is proud to support the 2027 Ontario Parasport Games in Brantford that will give Ontario’s best athletes the chance to compete with their peers from across the province as they prepare for the Paralympics and beyond,” Lumsden said in a news release.
The province is investing $200,000 to support the city’s successful bid, adding the games will “drive tourism and boost Ontario as a top sports destination.”
The Ontario Parasport Games are held every other year and highlight athletes with disabilities. The event aims to prepare para-athletes for national and international competitions, including the Canada Games, Parapan Am Games, and Paralympics.
More than 400 athletes, coaches and assistants are expected to take part in next year’s games, which will feature sports such as wheelchair basketball, goalball, para ice hockey, and wheelchair curling.
The provincial government said the event will bring a $750,000 boost to Brantford’s economy.
“The City of Brantford is honoured to be selected as the host for the 2027 Parasport Games,” Brantford Mayor Kevin Davis said in a news release. “This is an exciting opportunity to once again showcase our city’s exceptional sport facilities, strong community partnerships and spirit of volunteerism. We look forward to welcoming the athletes to our community and celebrating their incredible athletic achievements.”
Brantford previously hosted the 2023 Ontario 55+ Summer Games, as well as the 2017 Ontario Parasport Games.
More to come.
