A 25-year-old man is dead after being hit by the driver of a vehicle in Hamilton on Monday night.

The crash happened near York Boulevard and Old Guelph Road.

Hamilton police said they were called to that area just before 8:45p.m. for reports of a vehicle striking a pedestrian.

They said a 25-year-old man was transported to the hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries but has since been pronounced deceased.

“Our thoughts remain with his family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” Hamilton Police Service said in a news release.

Police said a “preliminary” investigation determined there was an interaction between two vehicles travelling eastbound on York Boulevard, west of Plains Road West.

It resulted in both vehicles pulling over and an occupant from one of the vehicles exiting to speak with the other involved driver, police said.

Investigators allege the pedestrian was hit when the second driver attempted to leave the area.

That driver, an unnamed 29-year-old male from Burlington, fled the scene but later contacted police, they said.

He has now been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and failure to stop after a collision causing death. The charges have not been proven in court.

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

York Boulevard was closed between Old Guelph Road and Plains Road West for several hours while investigators examined the scene but has since reopened.

The investigation is ongoing and police say they’re ”actively seeking any potential witnesses.” They’re also asking motorists who were in the area at the time to review their dashcam footage.
