A 13-year-old has been charged in connection with a bomb threat made to a school in Hamilton in January.

Hamilton police said they were called to Highview Public Elementary School on Jan. 20 to investigate a reported threat.

“The threat was received by school staff which indicated that an explosive device would detonate later that afternoon,” police said.

School officials evacuated the school as a precaution, relocating about 500 students and staff to a nearby high school.

Officers searched the school and property and found no explosive devices or suspicious items, police said.

In a news release on Tuesday, following a three-month-long investigation, police revealed that they took a 13-year-old into custody.

He has been charged with public mischief and uttering threats to cause bodily harm. The teen cannot be identified under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
