A 38-year-old man is facing several charges after he shot himself during an attempted home invasion in Hamilton, police say.
Hamilton Police Service said on May 2 at about 9:30 p.m. officers responded to reports of a shooting in the Landsale neighbourhood, in the area of Steven Street between Wilson and King streets.
They say one person suffered serious gunshot injuries and was treated at a local medical centre.
“Investigators identified a blood trail believed to be associated to the shooting and while following it, located a discarded firearm,” police said in a news release.
“Based on the evidence at hand, Detectives believe that the recovered firearm was the same one used in the shooting.”
They added that they were able to determine that the person who was shot was the same individual alleged to be responsible for the shooting.
“The accused is believed to have shot himself during an attempted home invasion,” say police.
As a result of this investigation, Eric Haines, 38, of Hamilton, has been arrested and charged with 29 offenses, including break and enter, criminal harassment, discharge firearm with intent, fail to comply with probation order, knowledge of an unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm, contrary to a court order, possession of a loaded, prohibited firearm, and reckless discharge of a firearm. The charges have not been tested in court and the accused has been held in custody.
