Homicide investigators say the body of a missing 48-year-old Hamilton man who disappeared more than a month ago has now been recovered.

Hamilton police said Marcin Sydor’s body was found on the morning of May 29 near Pier 16, private property belonging to Stelco. An employee of the company was the one who made the discovery, police said.

A post-mortem examination has confirmed that Sydor, who was reported missing on April 27, was the victim of homicide.

Police said they are not releasing the cause of death or the nature of Sydor’s injuries in order to “protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation.”

“Marcin’s disappearance prompted an extensive missing person investigation. Investigators pursued numerous avenues in an effort to locate him after his absence was reported and quickly determined that his disappearance was out of character and inconsistent with his usual behaviour,” Staff Sgt. John Obrovac told reporters.

“What began as a missing person investigation has now become a homicide investigation. Hamilton police extend our condolences to Marcin’s family and his loved ones.”

Police said they are looking for information regarding a black 2014 Volkswagen Jetta wagon with the licence plate number DFBY071.

According to investigators, Sydor was known to be driving this vehicle at the time of his disappearance. The vehicle, police said, was registered to a family member.

While police confirmed that Sydor was known to police prior to his disappearance, they would not elaborate.

“Investigators are asking anyone who had contact with Marcin, anyone who may have observed him, or anyone with any information regarding his activities and movements prior to his death to contact us,” Obrovac said.
