A 33-year-old driver has been charged with dangerous operation causing bodily harm and impaired operation of a vehicle for a fiery crash in Waterford.

On Monday night, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Sergeant Ed Sanchuk posted a video to social media.

He said police, paramedics and the fire department had been called to a collision between an SUV and another vehicle at the intersection of Thompson Road East and Duncombe Road around 6 p.m.

“What I can tell you is that there was a collision, the SUV burst into flames,” Sanchuk said. “A Good Samaritan heard this crash, came out and rescued that driver from that burning SUV.”

In an update on Tuesday, OPP Constable Andrew Gamble confirmed the driver of the other vehicle was air-lifted to a trauma centre with serious, and potentially life-altering, injuries.

“Folks, this was an extremely frightening situation where two people narrowly avoided tragedy,” Gamble said in a social media video. “But what makes it even more concerning, is this collision was entirely preventable.”
