Niagara police are urging residents to “remain vigilant in protecting their personal property” following a rise in jewelry distraction thefts in the region.

Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) say they have received more than 65 calls for service for distraction thefts since January.

Investigators say these incidents typically involve multiple suspects who arrive in a van or SUV and begin a conversation with the victim, often asking for directions.

They say after befriending the victim, the suspect(s) becomes insistent on offering them a so-called thank you gift, which is usually a piece of fake jewelry.

“The suspect then places it over their neck and simultaneously removes the victim’s real jewellery, leaving the area before the victim is aware their jewelry has been stolen,” police said in a news release.

“While the NRPS encourages providing assistance to others, we advise the public to use caution when approached by strangers and be mindful when anyone unknown to you is attempting to approach into your personal space.”

Niagara police are urging anyone who believes they are a victim of a distraction theft or anyone who wishes to report a suspicious incident to contact them at 905-688-4111 or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
