A 23-year-old man from Welland, Ont. died after his canoe capsized while fishing on a lake in western Quebec.

The MRC des Collines-de-l’Outaouais police says a canoe with four people onboard capsized on Lac a la Truite in La Pêche just after 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16.

No one onboard was wearing a lifejacket.

Police say three of the people onboard were able to reach the shore, but a fourth person was missing in the water.

Officers using a boat found docked on the shore located the victim in the water, but an officer was unable to retrieve the body when they jumped into the water.

Firefighters from La Pêche eventually recovered the body at 4 p.m. The victim was pronounced dead at the Wakefield hospital.

“The investigation does not show any evidence of a criminal nature,” police said.
