Brampton man arrested in connection with ‘reckless gunfire’ in Muskoka

Provincial police released a social media video statement as they investigate circulating videos of ‘careless’ firearm use in the Muskoka region.

A man from Brampton has been charged in connection with a firearms incident in cottage country that was captured on video and circulated online.

Hundreds of empty shell casings littered an area near a bridge in MacTier, along with broken glass, garbage and signs with bullet holes after police say several individuals were firing an assortment of guns. OPP issued an appeal for information over the weekend after the online videos surfaced.

Local politicians sounded the alarm after seeing the videos, reportedly taken along a hydro access road often used for recreation purposes.

Parry Sound-Muskoka MPP Graydon Smith, MP Scott Aitchison and Georgian Bay Township Mayor Peter Koetsier, expressed shock and disappointment, calling the “careless discharge of firearms” serious business that put both people and wildlife in potential danger.

On Wednesday, police arrested a 24-year-old man and charged him with two counts of careless use of a firearm. Additionally, his firearms licence and weapons were seized, police say.

The investigation is ongoing, with investigators gathering evidence and following up on leads.

“The OPP takes firearms incidents very seriously. Behaviour that compromises the safety and security of our communities will not be tolerated,” OPP stated.
