A Toronto man is facing multiple charges after allegedly carjacking the vehicle he crashed into along a highway near Pearson airport over the weekend.

In a video posted to social media, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the crash happened at around 1:20 a.m. on Sunday.

A black Mazda was travelling in the southbound lanes of Hwy. 427, near the Hwy. 409 and Hwy. 401 split, when it collided with a brown Hyundai Santa Fe, lost control, and hit a wall.

Schmidt said the driver of the black Mazda, a 22-year-old Toronto man, then carjacked the Santa Fe, which had a family of four in it at the time of the collision, and fled the scene.

Toronto OPP has since located, arrested and charged the suspect, who is currently in custody pending a bail hearing.

“He is facing charges of armed robbery, uttering threats, obstruct police officers, taking a motor vehicle without consent, possession of property obtained by crime, theft over $5000, driving while under suspension, careless driving, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose,” Schmidt said in the video.

OPP are asking any witnesses or anyone with dashcam video to contact them at 416-235-4981.
