A 46-year-old man is in police custody following a stabbing in Brampton that left his mother and sister critically injured on Thursday night.

According to police, an altercation occurred at a home in the area of Cherrytree Drive and Ray Lawson Boulevard, near Hurontario Street and Steeles Avenue West, shortly after 10:45 p.m.

Two women, one in her 50s and another in her 70s, were found suffering from stab wounds, police said.

They were rushed to hospital in critical condition and are currently receiving treatment.

In an update at the scene on Friday morning, Const. Laurie McCann told reporters that the women are currently in “somewhat stable” condition.

McCann confirmed that the 46-year-old suspect initially fled the area in a vehicle but was arrested a short distance away from the home.

His name has not yet been released.

McCann said the suspect is related to the two victims but would not provide further information about their relationship.

The victims are the suspect’s mother and sister, his lawyer told CP24.

Police said the suspect faces two counts of attempted murder.

It is unclear if the suspect also resides at the home.

A weapon was recovered at the scene, she said.
