Tow truck driver dead after being pinned underneath vehicle in Brampton

Sijia Liu has the latest from the scene of a fatal workplace incident in Brampton, after a tow truck driver was pinned underneath a vehicle.

A tow truck driver is dead after he was pinned underneath a vehicle at an auto shop in Brampton on Friday evening.

Peel police said the incident occurred at 277 Advance Boulevard, near Steeles Avenue East and Tomken Road, and they received the call shortly after 6:30 p.m.

Speaking to reporters at the scene, Peel police Sgt. Taylor Halfyard said the tow truck driver was unhooking a vehicle from his tow truck when the incident happened.

“At some point during that process, and this is part of the investigation that we’re still trying to determine and understand at this time, our victim ended up underneath the vehicle, and the vehicle did run over him,” Halfyard said.

Emergency crews performed life-saving measures on the victim, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, Halfyard said. The victim has not been identified.

He added that the Ministry of Labour is conducting an investigation into the incident.

“Typically, in these types of incidents, Peel Regional Police conduct a parallel investigation, and we investigate if there’s any element of criminality in the incident. From what we have gathered so far in our investigation, it doesn’t appear as though there is,” Halfyard explained.

“It appears as though this investigation will be conducted by the Ministry of Labour for the workplace aspect.”
