Peel police are searching for a suspect accused of striking a patrol officer with his car to evade arrest during a traffic stop in Brampton last week.
Police said the officer noticed a vehicle parked near Peel Centre Drive in the evening of May 26 had improper licence plates, so they conducted a traffic stop to investigate.
During the interaction, the driver allegedly became uncooperative and abruptly ran away.
“After a foot pursuit, the suspect resisted arrest, assaulting the officer during a physical struggle,” police allege in a news release on Friday.
The driver, police said, was able to break free and run back to his vehicle.
“In a reckless attempt to escape, the suspect drove off, striking both the officer and the marked patrol vehicle before fleeing the scene,” police said.
The officer sustained minor injuries.
The vehicle is a grey 2007 four-door BMW 525i with Ontario licence plate CSLJ609.
In Friday’s news release, police identified the suspect as 41-year-old David Munoz.
He is wanted for assaulting a peace officer, assault with a weapon, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, breach of probation and failure to comply with a release order.
They said he was prohibited from driving at the time of the incident.
