A passenger is dead and several other people have been seriously injured following a two-vehicle collision in Brampton late Saturday night.

Emergency crews say they were called to the intersection of McVean Drive and Countryside Drive at around 10:44 p.m.

Peel Regional Police say the passenger in one of the vehicles was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of that vehicle also suffered injuries.

Police say the second vehicle was carrying a driver and three passengers. The driver sustained life-threatening injuries, one passenger suffered life-threatening injuries, another sustained life-altering injuries and a third passenger was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“When police arrived on scene, they located two vehicles. One was in the intersection, the other had veered off the road and onto the front lawn of a home,” Media Officer Laurie McCann told reporters.

Investigators say it appears one vehicle was travelling southbound on McVean Drive while the other was travelling eastbound on Countryside Road.

“It is early on in the investigation, but it does appear that one of the vehicles did go through a red light,” McCann said.

Police said all of the people involved are men in their 20s, but no further identifying information is being released until next of kin have been notified.

The intersection remains closed while investigators examine the scene. Police are also asking drivers to avoid the area and use alternate routes.
