A man has been arrested on attempted murder and extortion charges as Peel Regional Police continue an investigation into an organized crime group known as “Four Brothers.”

In May, police arrested 17 suspects believed to be members of the group in connection with a string of violent extortion incidents targeting members of the South Asian business community in Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga.

According to police, a Brampton business was targeted in an early morning shooting on April 21. Investigators recovered 14 shell casings at the scene. The suspect fled before officers arrived.

Police say that on May 6, a man was leaving his home when he was approached by an unknown individual.

The suspect allegedly pointed a firearm at the victim, but the weapon malfunctioned, allowing the man to escape. The suspect fled the scene.

On June 23, officers with the Edmonton Police Service arrested 22-year-old Safaldeep Singh during a traffic stop. Police say they seized a loaded illegal firearm and a quantity of drugs.

Singh was later transferred to the custody of Peel Regional Police and charged with one count of conspiracy to commit murder and one count of extortion.

“Organized crime operates without regard for jurisdictional boundaries, and our response must be the same. Deputy Chief Nick Milinovich of Peel Regional Police said in a statement Thursday.

Extortion has a serious impact on victims and communities, and we are committed to addressing this harm through targeted enforcement and strong partnerships across the country.”

Singh was denied bail and remains in custody.
