Officials say they were originally investigating reports of a shed on fire in Brampton when they discovered a dead body inside.

Peel police are investigating after a body was discovered in a Brampton shed where a fire broke out on Thursday afternoon.

Police said they got a call at 3:45 p.m. for a shed on fire in the rear of a home on Aloma Crescent, northwest of Steeles Avenue East and Bramalea Road.

After crews extinguished the fire, the body of what is believed to be a male was located in the shed, police said.

The cause and circumstances of his death are not immediately known. Peel police media relations officer Const. Tyler Bell said any unexplained death is going to be treated as suspicious.

“It doesn’t mean that there’s foul play involved, but we want to make sure that we leave no stone unturned to determine what happened to this individual,” Bell said.

He noted that the police investigation will focus on whether the man died from the fire or before that.

“It’s too early for us to actually determine that as of yet. So, what will happen is the remains will be taken for the purposes of a postmortem examination to determine cause of death, and those results will be returned to us to determine if there’s any criminality,” Bell said.

When asked if the man lived on the property, he said police have not been able to confirm that as they are still in the process of identifying him.

“At this point, it would just be speculative for me to say whether or not he’s associated to the property or not. We just don’t know yet,” Bell said.

Brampton Fire Services Division Chief Ron Rolfe said the fire was contained in the shed.

“The fire was knocked down very fast. It’s not a very large structure,” he said.

As for the cause, origin and circumstances of the fire, the Ontario Fire Marshal is investigating.
