An 18-year-old woman has been charged with attempted murder after a male was critically injured in a stabbing on a bus in Mississauga, Peel Regional Police say.
According to police, the incident happened on a MiWay bus at around 1:50 a.m. near Hurontario Street and Watline Drive.
At a news conference on Tuesday morning, police told reporters an altercation broke out on the bus between the 17-year-old male and the woman, who were known to each other prior to the attack.
At some point, the woman stabbed the male with an “edged weapon,” police said.
The male was rushed to a Toronto trauma centre for treatment and his condition deteriorated from stable to critical shortly after his arrival at the hospital.
The woman was arrested at the scene. She has been charged with attempted murder, assault with a weapon, and obstructing police, investigators say.
Investigators say the stabbing was an “isolated incident” and there is no further threat to public safety.
The nature of the relationship between the suspect and victim is not clear at this time. Police could not say if they got on the bus together.
Police are currently viewing CCTV footage and are asking anyone with video of the incident who has not yet spoken to investigators to come forward.
Multiple other passengers were on the bus at the time of the stabbing, police said.
“We have Victim Services supports for the witnesses,” Const. Amanda Steenson told reporters.
“It is a very concerning thing that took place.”
