A 27-year-old woman from Brampton, Ont., is facing nearly 40 charges after allegedly defrauding renters of more than $60,000, police say.
Peel Regional Police (PRP) say a woman advertised residences, like basement apartments, for rent on various social media platforms between May 2025 and February 2026.
Investigators say tenants signed rental agreements and sent deposits for the first and last month’s rent. However, when they arrived at the properties with their belongings, they were not available.
In many of the cases, police said that the victims had already moved out of their previous residences when they discovered the fraud.
Police say they have identified 17 such cases, with combined financial losses exceeding $60,000.
“None of the victims received the promised accommodations or had their money returned,” PRP said in a news release.
On July 13, Savreet Kaur, 27, of Brampton, was arrested and charged with 38 counts of fraud over $5,000 and one count of obstruct police. The charges have not been tested in court.
She was held in custody for a bail hearing.
Renters should ‘exercise caution’: police
Peel police are advising members of the community to “exercise caution when searching for rental properties via social media” and are urging people to visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre for more information on fraud prevention.
