A man was taken to a trauma centre with serious, “life-altering” injuries on Monday following an incident at an under-construction highrise building in the heart of downtown Toronto.

Emergency crews were called to 1 Bloor West, the future site of an 87-storey building at the intersection of Yonge and Bloor streets, just before 1 p.m.

Toronto Fire said they received a call about an injured worker and initially had trouble reaching him. They later said that a work feel from a platform on the 67th floor down to the 66th.

Toronto Paramedic Services said they transported one person to a trauma centre. They later confirmed that one male worker was transported from the scene with a serious, “life-altering” injury.

It’s not yet clear exactly how the man was injured.

The Ministry of Labour is investigating.

The project’s developer, Tridel, told CP24 that an individual at its One Bloor West construction site was transported to hospital for “further care” following an on-site incident.

“We are relieved to confirm the individual was responsive at the time, and our thoughts are with them and their loved ones as they focus on recovery,” the company said in a written statement.

“The safety and well-being of our employees, tradespeople and everyone on our sites is our highest priority. Our immediate focus is to support those impacted and to cooperate fully with all investigating authorities to help us understand what occurred.”

Tridel noted that safety measures and protocols were in place at the time of the incident and that it is “working closely with the Ministry of Labour as they lead their investigation, and we are also initiating an independent review to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the event.”

Former developer, Mizrahi Developments, has also offered a statement.

“We were saddened to hear about the incident onsite at The One, via the media, this afternoon. We hope the worker makes a full recovery,” the company’s president, Sam Mizrahi, wrote.

“Mizrahi has not been the general contractor of this project since March 2024 and has no involvement in the day to day operations of the site, so we cannot provide any information or details as to what happened. Our only concern is for the wellbeing of the worker.”
