Toronto police are investigating after a pedestrian was struck and killed in Toronto’s downtown core early Wednesday morning.
The collision occurred near Sherbourne and Shuter streets at around 12:30 a.m.
Duty Insp. Jon Rose told reporters Wednesday that a man in his 40s was driving down Sherbourne Street when he made contact with the pedestrian.
“It was reported to police that a man in his 20s was lying on the roadway at the time of this collision,” Rose said.
Paramedics attempted life-saving measures but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The driver did remain on scene and he is cooperating with investigators,” Rose noted.
Roads were closed in the area for several hours for the investigation but have since reopened.
Rose said investigators with the traffic services division are working to piece together the circumstances surrounding the crash.
“Traffic services investigators are actively working on gathering all of the facts,” he said.
“If anybody has any dashcam video that were in the area, we would definitely like to hear from you.”
Rose called the fatality a “heartbreaking incident.”
“Our thoughts are with the family and any friends of the victim,” he said.
