The Toronto District School Board has pushed back the dates to apply for specialized programs after the school board abruptly changed the admissions process from a lottery system to a merit-based application.
The application period initially was set to open on Nov. 10 and run for three weeks.
But at least one parent told CP24.com that this timeframe provided parents with little time to get their applications together when factoring the need for portfolios and audition tapes.
Applications can now be submitted between Nov. 24 and Dec. 12 at noon, the TDSB’s website says.
“The applications period has been adjusted to provide students with more time to plan and prepare for the required elements of the application (e.g., the creation of portfolios and videos and in-person demonstration of knowledge and skills),” TDSB spokesperson Ryan Bird told CP24.com in an email.
In a letter to parents released last month, Canada’s largest school board announced that it would be making the switch from a lottery system to a merit-based system “based on direction from the Supervisor appointed at the TDSB by the Minister of Education.”
The specialized programs, which focus on arts, math, science and technology, leadership, among others, are offered at both the elementary and secondary level at several schools throughout the TDSB.
For elementary students, the board said, applicants will be admitted based on an evaluated portfolio or audition video submitted with their application.
Secondary students will be required to meet a report card benchmark
“Applicants will be seated based on their overall applicant score; a combination of select report card marks connected to their program of choice and an evaluated demonstration of knowledge and skills,” the letter continued.
