North York apartment fire sends 2 to the hospital, displaces several others

Courney Heels has the latest on the investigation after a 2-alarm fire that broke out at an Eglinton Ave. apartment, thought to be started by an e-bike.

Two people were sent to the hospital and several others were displaced on Thursday morning after an e-bike reportedly caught fire in North York.

The blaze broke out at a low-rise building at 2701 Eglinton Ave. W., near Black Creek Drive.

Toronto fire said they were called to that area shortly before 5:30 a.m. and found a fire on the second floor of the three-storey building.

The building was evacuated and paramedics say they two women in their 50s were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

A TTC bus was brought in to shelter displaced residents.

Officials told CP24 that the building sustained significant smoke damage and one unit was completely destroyed by the fire.

Toronto Fire Chief Jim Jessop later posted photos of the damage in a post on X.

The circumstances of this fire, which is now out, are under investigation.

In a follow-up post on X, Jessop said Toronto fire battled two lithium-ion battery fires in the city in less than 12 hours on Thursday, sharing a photo of a cell phone that had ignited in another incident this evening.

“These incidents can ignite without warning, spread rapidly, and release toxic fumes,” wrote the fire chief.
