Arrest made in Liberty Village homicide investigation: police

A 37-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with a fatal Liberty Village stabbing on Boxing Day.

A 37-year-old man was arrested Sunday in a deadly stabbing in Toronto’s west end last week, investigators say.

Officers say they responded to reports of a stabbing in the area of King Street West and Joe Shuster Way at around 8 p.m. on Dec. 26. They found a victim suffering from stab wounds in the area and he was transported to hospital before being pronounced deceased.

The victim was later identified as 32-year-old Marcel Cardiff, of Toronto.

In a news release issued Monday, Toronto police said they arrested a suspect, identified as Matthew Brown, of Toronto. He faces one count of second degree murder.

The fatal stabbing marks Toronto’s 42nd homicide of 2025.
