‘Staged’ collision leads to carjacking in Vaughan: police

Published:

Crime analyst Steve Ryan says a driver of a car left their vehicle after being rear-ended, when a suspect allegedly got into the vehicle and drove off with it.

Police are investigating after suspects allegedly “staged” a collision in Vaughan before stealing the vehicle they crashed into.

York Regional Police said it happened early Friday morning, at approximately 12:40 a.m., in the area of Hilda Avenue and Pinewood Drive, near Yonge Street and Steeles Avenue.

They said the victim was driving their Acura MDX when they were rear-ended by a dark-coloured SUV. Once the victim got out to inspect the damage, a suspect entered the vehicle and drove off. It’s unclear if the victim sustained any injuries.

At least two male suspects were involved, police said. No suspect descriptions were provided.

“Investigators are appealing for any witnesses to come forward,” police said in a news release issued Friday. “Officers would also like to speak with anyone who may have video surveillance or dashcam footage in the area at the time of the incident.”
