A 40-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly driving a stolen vehicle into the Queens Quay streetcar tunnel and fleeing the scene on Tuesday morning.
The incident happened just before noon and involved a grey Honda Accord, Const. Viktor Sarudi, of Toronto Police Service, told CP24.
He said the motorist ran away.
Sarudi said it is not known at this time if the driver sustained any injuries. He later told CP24 that no injuries have been reported.
The constable went on to say that James Macadam, 40, of Toronto, will be charged with numerous offences including dangerous driving and possession of stolen property over $5,000. The exact charge list is being finalized, Sarudi noted.
Vehicle towed from tunnel: TTC
On Tuesday afternoon, TTC spokesperson Stuart Green said the situation is ongoing as crews work to tow the vehicle from the streetcar tunnel. He said it went all the way to the ferry dock station.
As a result, streetcar service was suspended for about four hours between Queens Quay West and the east side of Lower Spadina Avenue as well as the Union Station streetcar platform. It has since resumed.
Security gates were installed at the Queens Quay streetcar tunnel back in 2018 to prevent such incidents from occurring.
