Durham Regional Police say two Bowmanville schools were placed under hold-and-secure orders after a person was stabbed nearby in an incident unrelated to either school.

In a release, police say at approximately 6:50 a.m., officers responded to an armed person call at a residence near Liberty Street North and Carlisle Avenue.

Two men were involved in a verbal altercation, according to police, and one of the men stabbed the other with a knife. The stabbing victim was taken to the hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers had a large police presence in the area, and Bowmanville High School and Duke of Cambridge Public School were temporarily placed in a hold-and-secure as a result.

Liam James Brookes, 28, from Clarington, was arrested and charged with assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm.

“The suspect and victim are known to each other,” Durham police said in an email to CP24. “This was an isolated incident and there are no concerns for public safety.”
