One person is in custody after a stabbing left three people in critical condition in North York.

Two people stabbed during an altercation inside a North York home on Monday night remain in critical condition, Toronto police say.

Police were called to a home on Plum Tree Way, near Bathurst Street and Steeles Avenue West, shortly before 10 p.m. for reports of “unknown trouble.”

When they arrived on scene, officers located four members of the same family suffering from injuries sustained as a result of a physical altercation involving a knife, police said.

According to investigators, two males, ages 23 and 26, sustained serious stab wounds. Two females, ages 29 and 51, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

A male suspect, who is also a member of the family, was arrested at the scene and was not injured.

In an update on Tuesday morning, police confirmed that two people remain in hospital in critical condition.

‘Shockwaves throughout the community’

Neighbours told CP24 that the family has lived at the home for more than a decade and some witnesses said they heard screaming prior to the arrival of emergency crews last night.

Speaking to CP24 at the scene on Tuesday, Ward 6 Coun. James Pasternak, who represents the area, said the community is understandably alarmed by what transpired on Monday night.

“People are always concerned when they hear about an incident like this,” he said.

“Obviously this is a tragic incident where multiple people were stabbed. That sends shockwaves throughout the community.”

A 53-year-old Toronto man has been arrested and charged with three counts of aggravated assault, three counts of assault with a weapon, and assault causing bodily harm.

“Police are not naming the accused to protect the identities of the victims,” police said in a news release issued Tuesday.

Investigators are not searching for any additional suspects, police said.
