Before Max Scherzer reportedly inked a one-year, US$3-million deal to return to the Toronto Blue Jays, his daughter wrote a heartfelt letter to the team last year in the hopes he would be re-signed.
“I am so sorry that you didn’t win the World Series. I hope that you win next time. I hope my dad is back on the team,” Scherzer’s daughter, Brooke, wrote in a handwritten note posted to Instagram by his wife, Erica May Scherzer.
“My whole family loves spending time in Toronto with our dad. We loved the aquarium, CN Tower and of course, the stadium. I am looking forward to coming back next season.”
The letter is dated Dec. 15, 2025, and Erica May said Brooke put it in an envelope and asked her parents to mail it to the baseball club.
“Looks like she gets her wish!” Erica May wrote.
News of Scherzer’s reported re-signing broke early Thursday morning. The details of the deal haven’t been confirmed by the Blue Jays, but the one-year contract would mark the three-time Cy Young Award winner’s 19th season in the majors.
The 41-year-old old ace went 5-5 with a 5.19 ERA in 17 starts over 85 innings for the Blue Jays last season. The future Hall of Famer’s post-season performance was highlighted by a standout start in Game 4 of the ALCS, where he emphatically argued to stay in the game after a mound visit from manager John Schneider. The Jays won that game 8-2.
He got the ball twice in the World Series, ahead of the Jays’ heart-breaking loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 7.

Scherzer can earn another $10 million in performance bonuses. He previously signed a $15.5 million, one-year contract with Toronto in February 2025.
Scherzer has two World Series titles on his resume, one with Washington in 2019 and one with Texas in 2023.
Erica May previously said she had a “feeling” he and her family of six would enjoy the experience when Scherzer signed with Toronto.
“Never could I have imagined just how special this season would turn out to be. Out of 18 seasons in MLB none has had an impact on our lives quite like this one,” she said at the time.
“Toronto, our family fell in love with your beauty, culture and people. Playing for an entire country is truly special.”
It’s unclear when Scherzer will get his first start in 2026.
