A Mississauga woman’s disappearance three-and-a-half years ago is now being investigated as a homicide, Peel police announced Monday.
Investigators say 38-year-old Mezhgan Aini, a married mother of three, was last seen and heard from in June 2022 in the vicinity of her apartment in the Applewood Heights neighbourhood, near Queen Frederica Drive and Dundas Street East.

She is described as five foot two with a medium build and long, straight black hair.
Aini also went by the names “Sara” or “Sarah,” police said.
Det. Kevin Robbie, the Homicide and Missing Persons Bureau, said Aini, who is of Afghani descent, worked in local Afghani clothing stores prior to her disappearance. She “worked closely with Afghani ladies,” he added.

Police say they’ve spoken with friends, family, and other contacts as they investigate her disappearance.
“God bless her, you know, because there’s no way the cops going to find this person, it’s been a long time,” a man from the area where Aini was last seen said on Monday.
“I mean it’s really sad. It’s somebody’s mother, somebody’s daughter,” added a young woman, also in the vicinity where she went missing.
“It’s very disturbing I’m very worried,” said another.
Family contacted police in June 2025
Last June, Peel Regional Police said they were contacted by her family members in Afghanistan, whom they said had been unable to reach her for an “extended period.”
Aini was listed as a missing person by police that month.
“I can’t imagine — it’s disaster, what is the reason for that?,” said one woman in the area where she was last seen on Monday.

Robbie, of Peel Regional Police, told CP24 on Monday that “there’s been no signs of life since June of 2022,” adding that they’ve looked into Aini’s phone and bank records.
Robbie wouldn’t say what caused police to update their missing person investigation to a homicide investigation but did say investigators have identified a suspect.
“We do have a suspect. At this point, I’m not going to divulge who it is at this point,” he said.
“We are obviously open to multiple different theories and we’re open to hear information that the public has.”
The suspect has not been arrested.
Investigators appealing for info
Police are appealing to anyone who observed “suspicious activity” near Aini’s apartment complex between June and September 2022, who has not yet spoken with them, or anyone with information about her or her family, to come forward.
Anyone with further information is asked to contact Peel Regional Police at 905-453-2121, ext. 3205, or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
