Three Barrie men, including a father and son who worked for Toronto police, appeared in a virtual courtroom Tuesday morning in Toronto, one month after being charged as part of an investigation into police corruption and organized crime.
John Madeley Sr., 55, and his son John Madeley Jr., 29, had their first appearance on charges announced by York Regional police at a press conference in February. Lawyers representing several of the accused made appearances in the courtroom.
The Madeleys and Ryan Cribbie, a 33-year-old Barrie man, who is accused of careless storage of firearms and conspiracy to commit extortion, were among about 30 people charged as part of Project South, a seven-month investigation into alleged corruption involving eight Toronto Police officers working with organized crime in online gambling and drug trafficking rings.

York Regional police believe several Toronto officers illegally leaked confidential information to gangs to carry out extortion plots and murder.
Madeley Sr, who is recently retired from Toronto police after nearly 30 years of service, faces charges that include breach of trust, several counts of unauthorized use of a computer, firearm charges, and possession of property obtained by crime over $5000 following an investigation between York and South Simcoe police.

The veteran officer was first charged in January alongside Thomas Phippard, also known as Frank the Tank. Madeley is accused of using threats and violence to collect debts from clients of what York police described as an illegal online gambling ring.
Madeley Jr. who became a Toronto police officer in 2022 is accused of breach of trust and unauthorized use of a computer. He did not make an appearance during the virtual proceedings.
Cribbie, who appeared in court by video without a lawyer, is seen in several photos on social media dressed as in a Brink’s armed guard uniform and an older photo wearing a patched leather vest beside a motorcycle.

Police have also charged 23-year-old Keajean Doman of Innisfil with attempted murder. Police said Doman is part of a gang who tried to kill a corrections management officer. Doman remains behind bars following his arrest in September and is accused of being linked to eight shootings from mid-August to early September 2025 in Vaughan, Brampton and London.
The accused are scheduled to return to a virtual Toronto courtroom in May. The allegations against them have not been tested in court.
