Police are investigating after gunfire was reported overnight at a Jewish synagogue in North York.

According to Toronto police, officers responded to reports of gunshots in the Bathurst Street and Glencairn Avenue area at around 12:08 a.m.

Police say officers located bullet holes in the front door of a building on Glencairn Avenue.

No injuries have been reported.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow said the North York incident occurred the same night another synagogue in Thornhill was struck by gunfire.

“Last night, two synagogues were targeted, in North York and Thornhill. These are disgusting acts of antisemitism, hate and intimidation,” Chow said in a statement posted to social media.

Speaking to the media, York police said they have no information to suggest that the two incidents are related.

However, Chow said Toronto police is increasing its presence in the area as investigators work to identify those responsible.

Police are dedicating additional resources to the case, including the Integrated Gun and Gang Task Force and the Hate Crime Unit, to support officers from 33 Division, she noted.

“Anyone with information or security footage should come forward to police immediately,” Chow said.

“These attacks on Jewish institutions must stop and as Mayor I will continue to support the Toronto Police with whatever resources are needed to make this happen. Toronto’s Jewish community has the right to practice their faith without fear, intimidation or violence.”

Chow added that antisemitic incidents often rise in Toronto as “international events unfold.”

“I want to be clear: it is never acceptable to target Jewish community.”

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
