Toronto police officer in hospital after collision involving stolen vehicle during traffic stop

Emergency crews are on the scene of a collision between a stolen vehicle and a police cruiser near Sheppard Avenue West and Allen Road on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.

A Toronto police officer is in hospital after a collision involving a stolen vehicle during a traffic stop in North York on Tuesday afternoon.

Police say it happened near Sheppard Avenue West and Allen Road shortly after 5 p.m.

Officers were alerted by their automated licence plate recognition system about a stolen vehicle and tried to stop it.

Police say the vehicle struck a police cruiser during an attempt to flee.

The driver then abandoned the vehicle and ran away but was arrested shortly after, police say.

One officer was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

There is no word on what charges will be laid against the driver.
