Durham police say a man who purchased a vehicle in Pickering using fraudulent documents has fled the country.
In a news release issued Friday, police said investigators from the financial crimes unit began looking into the Feb. 2025 transaction last summer.
It’s alleged that the suspect attended a Pickering dealership at that time to purchase a new Hyundai Elantra, but used fraudulent documents to get the car.
Police said the suspect made no payments on the vehicle, which was exported to the Netherlands.
“The suspect fled the country within a week of purchasing the vehicle,” police said.
Ovidiu-Ionut Dumitru, 36, of Romania, is wanted for fraud over $5,000, make false statement to procure credit, and disposal of property to avoid creditors.
Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact Det.-Const. Taylor of the financial crimes unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5283.
