Environment Canada had issued a warning that significant rainfall could soak Toronto this weekend, with up to 40 millimetres expected.

The national weather agency said on Saturday the ground “may have little ability” to absorb further moisture due to recent rainfall, noting that an increased likelihood of pooling on roads is possible.

Officials said “heavy rain this weekend” will bring totals of 20 to 40 mm with the heaviest downpours expected Saturday evening.

Forecasters said the system could intensify at times, noting that locally higher amounts are possible in thunderstorms.

The system is expected to move through by late Saturday night, though lingering impacts could depend on how much rain falls during peak periods.
