Starting this week, Metrolinx says customers can expect to see a “regular police presence” at Union Station in an effort to boost safety ahead of a “busy summer travel season.”

In a news release issued Monday, the provincial transit agency confirmed there will be more police officers at the transit hub starting on April 20.

“In collaboration with Toronto Police and other stakeholders, paid duty officers will work closely with Metrolinx special constables, strengthening coordination, response times and ensuring quicker interventions when needed,” the news release read.

“Metrolinx special constables receive provincially mandated training aligned to Ontario Police College standards, with specialized transit and de‑escalation training to handle complex situations safely and professionally.”

Metrolinx said the safety measures come in the wake of more people returning to the office, summer concerts, and major sporting events, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“As we prepare for an unprecedented surge of riders — more than half a million additional GO and UP Express customers during the World Cup alone — safety remains our top priority,” Michael Lindsay, President and CEO of Metrolinx President, said in a written statement accompanying the release.

“Enhanced Transit Safety Officer coverage and increased police presence are all part of the comprehensive planning we’ve been doing for months to ensure every rider, whether they’re heading to a match, a concert or their daily commute, feels confident on our system.”

The additional officers come following an announcement by Metrolinx that starting this spring, Customer Protection Officers, Revenue Protection Officers, and Station Safety Ambassadors will begin wearing body-worn cameras.

In‑vehicle dash cameras will also be rolled out across the GO Transit and UP Express network, Metrolinx previously confirmed.
