The Gardiner Expressway is scheduled to reopen a few hours earlier on Monday after being closed for the weekend.

In an update on Sunday, the city said the closure is set to end before 2 a.m. as work had been progressing well. The expressway was originally set to open at 5 a.m.

The Jameson Avenue on‑ramp to the westbound Gardiner Expressway reopened at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, the city added.

The Gardiner has been closed between the Humber River and Spadina Avenue since Friday night as the city carried out infrastructure maintenance and preparation for the FIFA World Cup.

“The work included final paving (which must be carried out through a single, continuous period and cannot be done in short, intermittent stages), involving approximately 2,100 tonnes of asphalt, as well as the installation of traffic sensors and final lighting,” the city said in a statement.

“Coordinating additional work during this required two‑day closure allowed crews to complete multiple tasks at once that would otherwise have required many additional hours of work spread across multiple closures, reducing repeated disruption to motorists.”

The city said the additional work included fixing 80 metres of guardrail and bridge railing, as well as collapsed and damaged catch basins.

Following the Gardiner, the Don Valley Parkway will be fully closed from Highway 401 to the Jarvis Street ramp between 11 p.m. on May 8 and 5 a.m. on May 11.
