A man accused of shooting a security guard during a robbery at Fairview Mall last week has committed “at least” six separate robberies and break and enters, Toronto police say.

Speaking at a news conference on Monday, Inspector Kristy Smith provided more details about the fugitive Kyle Douglas Prouse, who is wanted in connection with the robbery and shooting at Fairview Mall last week.

“This is an individual who has demonstrated a pattern of escalating and dangerous behaviour,” Smith said.

“We are concerned about the risk he poses to public safety.”

Prouse allegedly walked into Fairview Mall shortly after it opened on the morning of April 21 with the intention of robbing a jewelry store inside the North York shopping centre.

A security guard was shot after confronting the suspect, police said.

Police said Prouse fled the mall in a white van that was later recovered and investigators believe he then used a black Honda Accord to escape.

During a news conference on Monday, Smith said the robbery was not “an isolated incident.”

She noted that investigators believe Prouse carried out at least six other robberies and break-ins at banks and jewelry stores in Ontario and Quebec dating back to 2023.

Police have said the 53-year-old suspect is from Montreal and has ties to Toronto and Vancouver.

“Since last week, investigators have been working around the clock to locate this individual,” Smith said.

Police have now released images of Prouse spanning a three-year period and are urging anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward.

“Anyone who is assisting him, harbouring him, or helping him avoid arrest may face criminal charges. This is a serious offence. If you have information, now is the time to come forward,” Smith said.

A ‘senseless shooting’

A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered by Crime Stoppers for information leading to the arrest of Prouse. It will remain in effect until Tuesday, June 30, 2026.

“Our city witnessed a brazen act of violence, a robbery that escalated into a senseless shooting involving a member of the Fairview Mall security team,” Toronto Crime Stoppers Chair Sean Sportun said on Monday’s news conference.

“This was not just an attack on a place of business, it was an attack on community safety, on the individuals who show up everyday to protect others.”

Police are urging anyone who spots Prouse to call 911 immediately and do not approach him.

Speaking directly to Prouse, Smith urged him to surrender to police.

“The safety and smartest thing you can do is contact a lawyer and turn yourself into police,” she said.
