Free Ernie Clement jerseys are already being sold for up to $400 online, after fans lined up for hours to get their hands on the swag before Monday’s Blue Jays game.

The replica hockey jersey giveaway attracted thousands of fans, some who lined up for seven hours before the gates opened at the Rogers Centre.

In one gate, the lineup for the in-demand item stretched all the way to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on Front Street.

The Blue Jays were only handing out jerseys to the first 15,000 fans entering the ball park.

“Not since Taylor Swift’s six nights of shows in 2024 has Rogers Centre seen such lines,” a post on the official MLB website said.

On Tuesday, several of the jerseys could be found on the resale website eBay, with prices that ranged from $68 to $400.

Jerseys prove to be fan-favourite free item

This was the third time the Blue Jays have done a hockey jersey giveaway, a spokesperson with the team said in an email.

“With the popularity of our George Springer Replica Hockey Jersey giveaway in 2024 and the Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Replica City Connect Hockey Jersey giveaway last season, we knew this was a fan-favourite promotion item,” they said, adding that the Clement hockey jersey giveaway was the fastest giveaway they’ve had all season and in the top three fastest giveaways of all time.

This season, 75 of the 81 home games include a promotion or theme day.

Clement the hockey fan

While the infielder is a hardcore hockey fan, who initially played the sport in high school, Clement pivoted to baseball for his professional career.

In March, he was spotted at a Maple Leafs game, with teammate George Springer, wearing a customized Leafs jersey.

It appears Clement’s fellow Blue Jays are fans of the hot-ticket item, as the team’s official Facebook page posted video of his teammates happily sporting the jerseys.

Clement has become a Blue Jays fan favourite, earning the nickname “Erndog.”

Blue Jays manager John Schneider has called the infielder “one of the faces of our team.”

Toronto signed Clement in 2023 after the Athletics waived him.

After spending most of 2023 with the Buffalo Bisons, the Blue Jays’ Triple-A team, he played 139 games with Toronto the following year and 157 games in 2025.

Clement was drafted in the fourth round in 2017 by the Cleveland Indians.
