A suspect has been arrested in connection with an unprovoked assault in downtown Toronto that is being investigated as a hate-motivated offence.

Toronto police said it happened in the area of College Street and Spadina Avenue on Sunday afternoon.

A man allegedly punched another person in the face during an “unprovoked interaction,” during which he also made anti-Black statements.

Police said a physical fight shortly ensued, and the suspect later fled the area.

Officers responded and subsequently located the man and arrested him.

In a news release on Thursday, police identified him as 47-year-old Chris Meier. He has been charged with assault and failure to comply with probation.
