Markham coach accused of breaching bail conditions amid sexual assault investigation

Published:

Police say the man has been arrested for violating a court order prohibiting contact with youth under 16, pending an ongoing sexual assault investigation.

A Markham basketball, tennis and volleyball coach previously charged with sexual offences involving youth is now facing additional charges for allegedly breaching his release conditions.

In June 2025, members of York Regional Police’s Special Victims Unit arrested and charged 59-year-old Garth Morris, of Markham, with sexual assault, sexual exploitation, invitation to sexual touching under 16, and sexual interference.

Police allege the incidents began in 2017, when the victim was under the age of 16, and continued until 2021. At the time, Morris was coaching youth basketball, volleyball and tennis.

Following the initial report, investigators said additional victims came forward alleging previous assaults.

While released on conditions during the investigation, Morris was ordered not to have contact with anyone under the age of 16 and not to attend schools, parks or community centres.

Police now allege Morris continued coaching youth while the investigation was ongoing. As a result of the alleged breaches, Morris was charged with three counts of failure to comply with a judicial release order.

Police are asking anyone with additional information or similar experiences to come forward.

“York Regional Police would like to encourage anyone who feels they may have been a victim of a sexual assault to come forward and report the incident to police.” police said in a press release.

“There is no statute of limitations for sexual offences and offenders can be prosecuted well after the date of the offence.”
